Psychodynamic Personality Theories Essay Example for Free

Psychodynamic Personality Theories EssayContemporary society is intrigued with the notion of human behavior as it expresses itself in our personality. Psychoanalytic model is most noted for introspective strategies such as depth interviewing and projective techniques, which have emanated from its theoretical perspective. Classical psychoanalytic conceptualization approached the make of character or personality in two very different ways, each deriving from an early theoretical model of individual development. In the date of reference of Freuds original drive theory, an attempt was made to understand personality on the basis of fixation. Later with the development of ego psychology, character was conceived as expressing the military operation of p fraudicular styles of defense. This second way of understanding character was not in conflict with the first it provided a different set of ideas and metaphors for comprehending what was meant by a display case of personality (Magnav ita, 2002). The contemporary psychodynamic model of personality is very popular, particularly with clinical practitioners, and offers much that is useful for conceptualizing personality and personal disorders. The strength of this model seems to lie in the power of many of its fundamental constructs, such as the unconscious, defense administrations, and the relation among component personality structures. It is hard to imagine a psychology of personality without few reference to these and other constructs. The limitations of this model are many. Unfortunately, after years of perpetuating itself in a closed system, a crisis developed about the viability of this model.Another draw O.K. is the tendency to eschew empirical research, which would have established wider scientific acceptance. For many, the conceptualizations and esoteric language make it difficult to immerse oneself in what seems a dogmatic intellectualized system for those who hide behind language. In conclusion knowing where to approximately place an individual on the structural continuum is as much a clinical art as a science. Reference Magnavita, J. J. (2002). Explore the dramatic Essay Example for Free

Explore the dramatic EssayLady Capulet, mother of the young Juliet, was only about 13 when she marital the overageder churchman Capulet. And now that Juliet has r to each oneed the eld of teens where girls are meant to be ready for join and childbirth, she is being pushed to look for a husband, and that is arranged to be capital of France. Al chiliadgh Juliet does non exactly despise or even shun Paris, she does not feel comfortable marrying or attempting to get to chicane someone who has been forced upon her without consent from her. Although Lady and Lord Capulet might take up the title of a married couple they are not close at all.Behind his back Lady Capulet makes remarks and jokes that demise Lord Capulet such as when Lord Capulet calls for a sword to fight, she laughs and says that he should instead be calling for a crutch as he is too old to fight. A crutch, a crutch Why call you for a sword? nevertheless on the other hand, when Lord Capulet is violently scream ing at Juliet for disobeying him and refusing to marry Paris and then threatens to throw her out of the house, Juliet looks to her mother for bread and besidester tho alls eh says is that she should listen to her father. And even when she asks for the nurses help she says that she better do what Lord Capulet says as she does not want to lose her chore by going against what Lord Capulet, her employer and man of the house she works in. So although they might not agree with anything the man in charge says, they (the nurse and Lady Capulet) wouldnt dare go against him. As a mother, Lady Capulet is not very close to Juliet at all. When she wants to get the point across that she should be prepared to marry and that she should try and get to go Paris as he is the one she should marry, she brings the nurse in to try and help her connect with Juliet and get to her as the nurse is the one who really brought up Juliet from a young age. only when rather than stick up for Juliet in her case that she does not want to marry yet, nurse agrees with Lady Capulet and she even makes an old fashioned joke that embarrasses Juliet and which Lady Capulet count onms to dislike and disagree with but in reality it is what Lady Capulet is trying to say.Thou wilt fall backward when thou comest to age , wilt thou not, Jule? This joke is portraying that in those days wo custody were not meant in order for much much than pleasuring the men and having babies. It is an honour that I dream not of. Here Juliet is summing up how she really feels about the option of marrying Paris. Although she is being polite to her mother by saying it would be an honour but she also makes it clear that it is not an honour that she doesnt want to sustain. Then Lady Capulet starts to explain how many girls the same age or even younger than Juliet gravel wives and even mothers and she too was Juliets mother around the same age. This might seem to Lady Capulet that she is convincing Juliet that marrying is a good thing and she can do it at that young age but she could easily be making Juliet second guess the chance of getting married because she can most likely see what Lady and Lord Capulets relationship is like and that they are very detached from each other and are not very close as a married couple.Today the idea of getting married at an age of 13 or 14 sounds absurd and it is even illegal under todays laws. But back in the Juliets time it was common and accepted that men would usually marry women much younger than them, sometimes even half their age. Women did not have many rights such as voting, they rarely went to school and any money they inherited or managed to earn if the were lucky enough to have a job would go straight to their husband or the closest man to them such as their father or brother. This was not only accepted by the men but by everyone.Women just accepted that their sole purpose was really to make babies, look after them and as sex toys. But in todays society it is very varied as women are allowed to make any choices they want, they have the same rights as men and they are allowed to choose themselves when they want to get married or have a child as long they agree with their partner. Juliets fathers thoughts also changed over time as at first he says to Paris that although he can give him Juliets hand in sum, he must also woo her and get her to honey him.As soon as their marriage is put in jeopardy when one of Paris kinsmen is killed, Lord Capulet is desperate to have the wedding and not have Paris shy away from Juliet so he straightway says to Paris that he can marry Juliet straight away and he comments on how they should marry three days time, as ii would be too short notice. But fettle your fine joints gainst Thursday next, to go with Paris to St. Peters church. This also shows that Lord Capulet is not in complete engage of everything and when the marriage of Juliet and Paris is put into danger, Lord Capulet desperately fights to save the marriage to rushing it to three days time. When Romeo and Juliet first meet at Capulets party they instantly fall in spot and they have a fatal first kiss which sends them into the turmoils of love. Afterwards, when they two find out who the other is, they realize that they are meant to be on opposite sides of a bitter family feud. Tis but thy name that is my enemy thou art thyself, though not a Matague. Before their kiss, which Romeo is much more eager to have, Romeo and Juliet exchange words which are in the form of a praise, the only one in the whole tale. This sole use of a sonnet accentuates the feelings in their words and importance of the scene.Romeo starts by talking about how he needs to soften Juliet with a kiss but Juliet holds back and says how in soliciting pilgrims pray and kiss by holding their hands against someone elses. Romeo comments on how hat they do with their hands, they should do with their lips. O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do . As Juliet tempts and holds Romeo back, the text is written in the form of a sonnet as Shakespeare tries to emphasize the deep feelings being exchanged surrounded by Romeo and Juliet. The sonnet uses rhyming to play a feeling of a poem to the text. The use of this single sonnet in the whole story also singles it out for the reader to know that it is very important and highlights a key point in the relationship of Romeo and Juliet as it is the first time they met each other. Which mannerly devotion shows in this And address to palm is holy palmers kiss. Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair. As shown in these alternate rhyming sentences, the text shows both Juliets teasing and Romeos eagerness. It is also rhythmic and adds flow to the conversation between the two star crossed lovers. The balcony scene is where Romeo and Juliet first express their true and deep feelings for each other. The balcony that at firsts separates Romeo and Juliet from touching each other acts as a symbol of the barriers of their familys history against each other. The balcony scene is an intense and decisive scene in the story as it is the point from where Romeo and Juliet cannot turn away from each other. It is the east, and Juliet is the solarise. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon. When he talks of the east he is talking about how the sun (Juliet) rises and that she is the one which lights up his heart.Moon is often coincided with virginity and she, the sun, must kill the moon, or her virginity, and he is the one to help her do so. I am too bold, tis not to me she speaks two of the fairest stars in all the heaven This could come as a certain amount of surprise to a reader as it shows how Romeo does not have incredible amounts of confidence about getting to Juliets heart. But then he also talks how she is a star and that she is something out of this world and when she rests her chin in her hand he wishes that hi s hand was hers just so that she could get the opportunity to touch her face.See how she leans her cheek upon her hand O that I were a boxing glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek As Juliet calls for Romeo she offers to give up her family name without hesitation and that her family name does not mean anything because she is in love. And Ill no longer be a Capulet thou art thyself, though not a Montague whats in a name? With loves light wings did I oerperch these walls, for stony limits cannot hold love out. Here Romeo is talking about the wall of Juliets house which he has to climb to get to her is like the family difference which separates Romeo and Juliet from being happy together. But Romeo explains that like the high boundaries of the wall, the family feud they are tied up in is no match for the love Romeo has and he will not be halt from loving her. Juliet is much more cautious and nervous about Romeo being caught and facing the punishment if he does. If they do see thee, they will murder thee. Romeo, as shown before is much more eager to be one with Juliet while Juliet is constantly slightly holding back. While Romeo is willing to swear on anything for his love for Juliet, Juliet says they are better off if they do not swear on anything at all as it is too sudden. And when Juliet insists that she has to leave Romeo asks why she has to leave him so unsatisfied. O wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied? But then Juliet proposes that if Romeo wants to prove his profound love for her he should set up their marriage as soon as possible. If that thy bent of love be honourable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow. She also seems very reluctant to let him leave as she is forced to go back inside as she has been called for. Good shadow, good night Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow. Here, as like earlier in the balcony scene, the words of Juliet rhyme for more affect as it is a very heart matt-up s entence. Rhyming also shows up in the next two lines when Romeo is talking, so Shakespeare must have entangle that this was an important or true moment of love between Romeo and Juliet as there was earlier in the balcony scene. The balcony scene is most likely the scene with the greatest amount of feelings being expressed which are revealed by means of language and forms of writing. Shakespeare does a very good job of making priorities stand out by making the language the text is written in different from text he usually writes. The sonnet is a fantastic way to capture the attention of a reader and create an atmosphere really felt between the two star crossed lovers. In the two films, the original version and the modern version, the balcony scene is portrayed in different ways but they also have many similarities. In both films, Romeo and Juliet or on opposite sides of a bitter family feud and have to endure the fighting between the two families. The modern film, as expected, is ve ry modernised. Rather than use swords for fighting, the two families have weapons such as guns and small hand knives.

The Goals Of Education Education Essay

The Goals Of Education Education EssaySince a student, I have nurtured the hallucination of being a teacher partly because of the powerful impact that my teachers had on me as role models. That dream was fulfil conduct two years ago when I was first given the opportunity to replace a teacher who took her maternity leaves at Imperial College and then I got to continue my journey in pedagogy in that same check. With solely my BSC in Sociology as qualification and without any prior training in teaching, the first time I entered a puzzle out 5 class, the only vision that I had in mind was of regimented students following all my instructions and participating in the class. I was completely stunned upon the type of welcome I received from the boys whistles and shouts. My first reaction was to maintain train as it is the main value of the college and thus, I had to adopt an authoritarian military capability to maintain order in the class. As time went by, I discovered few changes in m yself. I was no longer the screamer who had to yell in classes to get students do their spurt, the way that I delivered the lessons were different and the questions that I set for class tests and exams were suited to the expects of the keep an eye oners. I also developed interpersonal skills which I used to deal with different types of students. This made me realize that development is not a destination but a journey where ones philosophy is constantly changing.2. 0 TEACHING PHILOSOPHY2. 1 The goals of commandmentEducation being a continuous process of acquirement, understanding and gaining knowledge is important for numerous reasons. Foremost, it teaches us how to move into our social and cultural environment since it involves transmission of academic knowledge coupled with cultural heritage, traditions, customs and values which serves as a unifying force. In the home(a) course of instruction Framework (2009), it is stated that within sociology, students should be taught about citizenship. Thus, school is the right place to plant the right seeds. Moreover, academics argue that the primary aim of education is to prepare people for work. However, as Rifkin argued in the End of Work, in this rapid technological era, the human workers are becoming obsolete for there are machines that work better and faster than human. As such, the aim of education can no longer be to prepare individuals for work but it should be focused towards growing talents and potentials in students for them to become versatile. I agree with Dewey here when he said that education should develop survival skills and problem solving ability in the students.Freires arguments in Pedagogy of the Oppressed redirected my attention to another goal of education which is to develop the enquiring minds of students and make critically examine our society and its institutions. The concept of liberatory education was appealing to me as a sociology teacher and a Marxist since it argues for an educa tion that get out lead to conscientization that is breaking through prevailing mythologies to reach new levels of awareness in the students minds, empowering them with a vision to trans fashion social order. In this process, students should develop critical thinking skills or higher order skills (Blooms taxonomy) so they are able to analyze and examine the multitude of perspectives and issues that they will come across during their lifetime.2. 2 precept idealsTo meet the above aims of education, there is the need for a professional teacher who not only acts with knowledge but also value the knowledge he possesses. Teaching to Transgress (1994) by Bell Hooks shed light on this issue. For Hooks, trenchant learning can take place when the teacher will see teaching as a sacred vocation aiming in the intellectual and apparitional addition of the students.Besides, teachers should also watch out for pupils assigned to their classes, bring home the baconing for the poor, the disadvanta ged, and the less able students. This is in line with Deweys literary argumentEvery mind has its own form suggesting that individuals vary within stages and that education must as a result be individualized. Building on the work of Banks (1981), in the Mauritian context, the teacher should be able to maintain a multicultural school environment by reviewing his own attitudes, instructional materials, assessment methods, counseling and teaching styles.2. 3 My Teaching utilizeMy beliefs of what education is and the roles of an ideal teacher have shaped my way of teaching to a certain extent. To begin with, I believe in implementing goal-oriented lessons. Usually, I cater for both academic and social objectives. Empathy in terms of respect and care for the students is embedded in my teaching. In fact, it has certainly been a powerful tool in understanding and connecting with students from diverse backgrounds. I realized that students are very much the product of their times due to glob alization. Their identity, self concept, ambitions and expectations from schools are all modeled by the media.Adjusting to the new situation is challenging and demanding. The traditional approach to teaching that is talk and chalk is working for few privileged pupils only and there is an urgent need to shift to a new technique. This is highlighted by Giroux when he said that we must move beyond reproductive approaches by recognizing that reproduction is a complex phenomenon that not only serves the interest of domination but also contains the seeds of conflict and transformation. Thus, I had to find ways to cope to the new situation. This led me to transform my class into a differentiated one in terms of both ability and cultural background to deliver the lessons tailored to the needs of the learners. If a child cant learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn. Ignacio Estrada. There are a number of assumptions underlying this particular quote. It not only sugges ts that we need to cater for the learning styles of the students but we should also review our teaching strategies to meet their needs. I have adopted the student-centered or constructivist learning where students are given responsibility for their own learning which further becomes meaningful for them. I thus see myself as a facilitator, guiding the students to construct their own understanding of the world around them. Thus, opposing the banking education as argued by Freire where the teacher will deposit information in the minds of pupils, I opt for strategies where the teacher will serve as mediator trance students will be active participants such as group work.I have an image of children as strong and capable beings. It is important to stimulate their growth by introducing new ideas and stretching them to progress. As far as possible I try to adapt the curriculum to their current social situations as well as religious and cultural backgrounds. Thus, I often think of students zones of proximal development to push them to the zone of potential development. For this very purpose, I consider the school to be the perfect arena for fostering life-long skills which are transferable to everyday life.Further, evaluation is done with the goal for students to improve. I share to the students what is expected, so that when I evaluate, they will know specifically what they need to improve on. This way, everyone is given a chance to succeed. Evaluation is not only done for the students but for my own sake as a teacher. As Hooks puts it rightly, teachers must be committed to a process of self-actualization that promotes their own well-being if they are to teach in a mood that empowers students. Therefore, I see to it that after each of my lesson, I do a self evaluation exercise so that I can identify my strong point and weaknesses as a teacher and work upon them to improve in the next class. However, I come across many difficulties in my role as a teacher at Imperial College. Girouxs claim that the teacher is a mere specialized technician within the school bureaucracy instead of a transformative intellectual has led me to ponder on my own situation. The culture of my school is at odds with what I have learnt at the Mauritius Institute of Education for the former preach discipline and academic result while the latter caters for the all round development of students. As such, reconciling the two is a demanding task and this is reflected in the survey results1of the Teaching Perspectives Index by Dan Pratt and John Collins, especially where my beliefs score exceeds my actions score. Time is another factor that constraint me for doing additional things for the welfare of the students.3. 0 CONCLUSIONBeing a teacher is the most noble job. The satisfaction that I obtain when my students excel in the subject matter is beggaring description. There had even been times when I archetype that I was living a nightmare with students misbehaving and not follo wing the class but then I got solace when I came across the following statementThe academy is not paradise. But learning is a place where paradise can be created. The classroom with all its limitations remains a location of possibility. (Hooks, 1994)I realized that I have a powerful tool (teaching) in my hand that I should use as much as I can. Readdressing disciplinal issues is possible and this requires commitment as a teacher and dialogue with students, school management and the wider community.REFERENCEBOOKS AND ARTICLESDewey, J. The Impact Of Online Shopping On Society Information Technology Essay

The Impact Of Online Shopping On Society Information Technology EssayNowadays in new era of technology, profits has already become part of our life. As Internet is becoming more(prenominal) widely used, we almost can find or do everything via internet. As or so(prenominal) businesses are attempting to globalize their sales, Internet becomes the primary means of advertising and selling their products or services worldwide. Many businesses are creating wind vane pages in addition to their sell stores, and umpteen start their businesses with online stores alone. Paul Demery (2006) said, according to a new report from Forrester Research, 75% of the 80 million U.S. online households present subvertd products over the Internet, with more than two-thirds having made an online purchase within the past three months. 8 million of web shoppers, 19% households spent $500 during the past three months, 16% spent between $250 and $499, 26% spent between $100 and $249, and 39% spent betwee n $1 and $99. Due to online shop is becoming more and more popular, there volition beat a lot of issues like, privacy, cheating, Fraud and security concerns, consumer expectation and etc.Online shopping websites is build to allow people to sell and advertise their item or barter for any things that they needed via website. In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee created the first World Wide Web server and browser. fit in to Kathryn (2010), in 1992, several years before Amazon was launched, there has a first-ever online bookstore been opened by a man yelld Charles Stack. Now it becomes Books.com. But, the first businesses to really make shopping online popular are Amazon and eBay which is launched by 1995 and 1996. These two businesses re primary(prenominal) among the top online shopping sites today. The system is build in ethical way as it allows people to sell and advertise their items or buy any things as they needed via website. However, some people who having guilty mind take this advan tage to do cyber crimes, such as cheating or scamming, stealing credit card information and etc. As stated in Wikipedia (2010), online shopping website brings a lot of advantages to public, such as more convenience, bring down terms and selection, information and review and etc. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages exist to a fault, such as fraud and security concerns, lack of broad(a) cost disclosure, privacy and etc.Online shopping website brings good impact to the IT industry. To maintain online shopping websites, it needs a lot of programmers, such as, analysis programmer, database administrator, security programmer, web designer and etc. It means that online shopping website is giving more opportunity for job. Data centers which providing hosting services leave alone bloom and many e shopping portals will be up online. On the time, many different e shopping portals will race to be the best which provides the best service and lowest price. It similarly gives mo re jobs opportunities to people for courier services. The implications of online shopping website toward the society have advantages and disadvantages. It depends on how people use on it. If people use it in right way, it will bring a lot of positive benefit. Kimberly Palmer (2007) said, according to Forrester Research, more than half of US households regularly shop on the web, but online purchases still make up only 7 percent of total retail sales. Nowadays, consumers can buy everything over the web, which mean it help us assuage time and money. Convenient is the main advantage for online shopping website, because it allows consumer shop at anywhere and anytime with just only a personal computer or laptop with an internet access. It also save consumer traveling time to retail stores. Convenience includes the overall ease of finding a product, time spent on shopping, post purchase service, complete gather information, and minimization of overall shopping effort (Christian Schaupp France Belanger, 2005). Researchers also identify convenience as a fundamental objective related to online shopping (Christian Schaupp France Belanger, 2005).Besides that, lower price and selection also play a very important role. It allows consumers able to quickly seek out deals for items with many different vendors. Consumer able to compares many different products, prices and products quality in same time. Online shopping is always get cheaper prices compare with retail stores, because online store does not have to generate the costs of running a shop and wages to salespeople, and all of the other running costs of a real world business. Other than that, for those who only have limited budget and want to start their own business, it highly recommended start from online shopping website. On the other hand, online shopping also will bring minus impact to society if it misused by public. For example, credit card or identity fraud. When consumers wanted to purchase something from website, they need to use credit or calculate card to make payment. So, some hacker will take this advantage to steal credit or debit card information via online shopping website. According to Danielle Miceli Rachel Kim (2010), the chart below shows that make purchases in person and make purchases online are more than four in 10 cases of fraud, which mean the security of online shopping is too weak. Because online purchases require only a credit or debit card number, this method of fraud is increasingly favored by criminals. Additionally, slightly more than 20% of victims of identity fraud had their information use to make phone or mail-order catalog purchases.Figure 1.1 what are the most common methods of fraud?Danielle Miceli Rachel Kim (2010)Besides that, cheating and scamming also one of very serious issues. For example, Philip Reed (2010) shows an example of online car-buying fraud, a girl named Joan (not her real name) won an online auction for a 2001 Chrysler Town Country minivan. It was a great deal, and the pictures made it look brand-new. But three weeks later, her family had lost $6,000 and she never got the van. She was a victim of a rapidly growing scam Internet fraud. In Joans case, she bid a minivan on Yahoo.com and then she has received an e-mail which informs her that she had won the bid and the van was hers. However, she did not see that Yahoo never posted her as the top bidder. The con artists merely captured her e-mail address and contacted her directly about a car that actually existed but was being sold by an trustful third party. What made Joans case especially tragic was that she was buying the van for her parents. She urged them to take out a loan to finance it and then sent their money to a supposedly secure escrow site. Escrows are used in car-buying as an impartial middleman, an agency that holds the money securely until the vehicle is shipped to the new owner. However, this escrow site, given the legitimate-sounding name safe- purchases.com, was a bank account controlled by the criminals. Once the funds were transferred there, the money was withdrawn, the account was closed and the paper trail was erased.Other than IT industry and society issues, online shopping also bring negative impact to environment. According to William Chen (2008), online shopping is encouraging more trash at the curbside. They mostly use courier to conduct their goods. Although there is not only in the local deliveries but also with amount of paper, plastic and cardboard that is pushed into city waste stream. Environmentalists are showing a great concern towards this. They have understood from surveys that the negatives are by far greater than the positives on environment. E-commerce has negative effects on the environment. A big negative impact online shopping has had on environment is the amount of non-recyclable materials that come with products ordered online which is bubble wrap, foam rubber and expanded polystyrene. As conclu sion, online shopping website is become more popular and powerful. Although online shopping have bring a lot of advantages to society, but there are some negative concerns of online shopping too. To avoid cyber crimes, consumers must be careful while using credit card via online shopping website. In addition, web programmer should upgrade and enhance the security level of the website to avoid those crimes. pretermit cyber crimes, pollution on our environment are getting more serious, as a human being, we should protect our earth and home. It is also suggested that consumers and retailer should use some recyclable material to deliver the goods. Eventually, all consumers will adapt to the online shopping technology and able to enjoy the convenient, innovative way of shopping.

A Case Study On Terrorist Database Screening Information Technology Essay

A Case Study On Terrorist Database Screening Information Technology EssayintroductionWhen the FBIs Terrorist Screening Center, or TSC, was created pursuance the 9-11 attacks, the goal was to consolidate entropy about suspected terrorists from different g all overnment agencies into a single arguing. This was intended to enhance communication and decrease processing successions. Subsets of the TSC pick up argument, such as the No Fly propensity, were added to reduce the wait for airplane passengers by screening only those who may be prevented from air change of location. However, several problems assimilate prompted questions regarding the quality and accuracy of the consolidated list. For a security measure reliant on identification of dangerous individuals, a lack of knowledge regarding the names of suspects is a key issue. Because the list may include duplicated name entries or terrorist aliases, obvious non-terrorists such as former Senator Ted Kennedy have a bun in the oven been subject to travel delays because of names that match those of suspected terrorists. According to the movement study, a single name on the list may have as many as 50 duplicates. This contri just nowes to the over 750,000 records that ease up up the TSC fit list. A major cause of name similarity or duplication is the process to be included on the list. various giving medication agencies perform sweeps of traveler information, utilizing misspellings and variations of terrorist names. This often contributes to inclusion of innocent individuals who do not belong on the list.Once an individual is on the list, there is no quick fix to be removed. According to the case study, over 24,000 requests to be removed from the list have been made, including requests from innocent travelers. Only 54 percent have been resolved due to an extensive processing meter of 40 days. The Department of Homeland Security developed the Traveler Redress Inquiry Program to befriend innocents rem ove themselves from the list and avoid the extensive screening and question that results from creation a traveler noted on the TSC watch list.Privacy and profiling have likewise been concerns surrounding the conception and further development of the watch list. To improve the screening process and reduce instances of erroneous inclusion, more detai conduct and personal entropy would have to be gathered about individuals on the list. This information may cause sensitivity and safety issues and contribute to existing criticism of the list because of its say-so ability to promote discrimination. whatever individuals on the list attest that they atomic number 18 marked on the list as suspected terrorists due to their race or ethnicity. However, without including private and sensitive info, the requirements for inclusion on the list willing remain minimal and contribute to more dark positives. The TSC is sueing to improve data and data management procedures. Improved communica tion between intelligence agencies in the future may greatly contribute to advances in the quality and accuracy of the list. But, as of now, the list stands as a major air travel security measure despite its flaws. According to the case study, Given the option between a list that tracks every potential terrorist at the cost of unnecessarily introduce about innocents, and a list that fails to track many terrorists in an effort to avoid tracking innocents, many would choose the list that tracked every terrorist despite the drawbacks.BackgroundA compilation of information from various articles get into to heartd as the basis for this case study. Journalists from expectant publications internet sites such as The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNN.com and Businessweek.com contributed to the creation of this case study through articles they wrote regarding the watch list. These articles, as advantageously as those who wrote them, serve as the case study firm.AnalysisThe TSC watch l ist has demonstrated a variety of strengths and weaknesses since its creation in 2003. Benefits of the list include safer air travel for passengers and reduced screening time, but this has come at the cost of inconveniences and cases of mistaken identity for many innocent travelers. Data surplusage and inconsistency have contributed to questioning of the lists accuracy and quality.A minimal lack of data and information has contributed to name duplication and erroneous inclusion of innocent travelers. In order to eliminate these false positives, or cases of mistaken identity, more information regarding each suspected terrorist on the list must be gathered. However, attempts to gather this necessary information have led to outcries of privacy invasion issues which have in turn caused continual delays in data gathering processes. Individuals do not want to be inconvenienced by the unintended inclusion on the list that is the result of lack of information, yet they do not want to comp romise private information to ensure that they are not falsely named as a suspected terrorist. In this aspect, it seems as if there is no decent standard for the amount of data to include that is a residual of enough, but not too much, information about a particular individual.Another issue that may contribute to inaccuracy is a lack of communication among government agencies. Non-FBI agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives do not view themselves as contributors to the watch list process, or they may disagree with what the FBI says constitutes terrorist activity. Some Department of Justice offices access information that may be necessary to include on the watch list but neglect to share that information with the FBI. Improved communication and coordination of sensitive and important information would greatly improve the quality and accuracy of the list. The government has made significant improvements through the initial creation of the consolidated watch list, but this could be further improved upon by better management practices and a shared information system. Creating a management team up specifically to monitor the watch list and the information supplied by other government agencies would improve the quality of the watch list as well as communication with vital contributors. This group could too ensure that innocents are not falsely included on the list. Combining the gathered data into communal information system would allow all the organizations who utilize the watch list access to important data and would create a watchdog effect as well as increased safety measures.DiscussionWhat concepts in this chapter are illustrated in this case? The concepts from this chapter that the case uses are file organization, and problems with the traditional file format including redundancy and consistency, data management and systems to manage the data, and ensuring data quality. Why was the conso lidated terror watch list created? What are the benefits of the list? The consolidated watch list was created to leaden down the time of processing names in the com sicker. A No Fly list was created as a subset of the terrorist watch list to lessen the time passengers are waiting at airports by only screening those who are specifically not allowed to get on a plane. According to the article director of Terrorist Watch List Says Government Has Technical Capability to Screen all Passengers Against Full List Before They Board Planes, by Fred Lucas of CNSNews.com, the No Fly list contains about 3,400 names, but the computers have the capability to screen the entire list if necessary. The article also states that about 14,000 names on the list are put in to another group that must have extra screening before the board an airplane. The benefits of a smaller list definitely decrease the time to look up names in the system. With over 750,000 names, many of which are actually duplicated, sho rtening the list makes using it much more efficient. Some also believe that the criteria for getting on the list may be too broad, and that shortening the list to include only the most necessary names to watch for will help decrease the amount of throng who are mistaken as terrorists.Describe some of the weaknesses of the watch list. What management, organization, and technology factors are responsible for these weaknesses? champion of the main weaknesses of the watch list is the lack of information associated with the names on the list. This problem has led to many people wrongly identified as terrorists, and duplicates of names. The case study said that one name may have up to 50 duplicates. The length of the list is also getting longer and longer, which may make it less effective. The case study explains that the organizations that play a role in developing the list motivating to have more consistent rules for what information is indispensable to get a name on the watch list an d understand what other groups indispensability to know who has been added so that a name is not duplicated. The organizations need to work together by sharing information to decrease these duplicates and make the list more detailed and informative for its users. The government could invest in some sort of ERP system that will update each organization when one name has been added to the list, so that each group can update the name with the cognize information about that specific terrorist. If you were responsible for the management of the TSC watch list database, what steps would you take to correct some of these weaknesses? The first step I would take to improve the list would be to have more research done on each name that the list includes. One of the main complaints of the list is that people are unsure of how a name gets added and why they are added. If there was a specific group of people whose job was to maintain the list we would be able to have more information show up whe n a name is found to be on the list to ensure that the person being screened is in fact a terrorist and not a person with a similar name.If this group was formed, they would also be responsible for removing unnecessary names on the list that create false positives for innocent passengers. The case study explained that many of the people who requested their name to get off the list are even so waiting and face extra scrutiny every time they try and fly. Keeping these names on the list also increase its size and inefficiency. eventually I would invest more technology into updating and maintaining the list. I think that this tool will be extremely helpful for airlines and keeping the world safer from terrorist attacks, but it must be easier to use and more reliable to increase its potential. After the Christmas Day Bomber almost successfully detonated a bomb over Detroit spell his plane was about to land, it is easy to see that we have a long way to go to protect ourselves from this treat.Do you believe that the watch list represents a significant threat to individuals privacy or Constitutional rights? Why or why not?Currently, I do not believe that this list is lumbering to an individuals privacy or Constitutional rights. The list is too broad right now and doesnt include very much information about the suspected terrorists. However, if they square up to do more research when pulling the list together people may feel that the government is being more invasive. Even with this extra research however, I do not think that it violates their Constitutional rights. If people want to be able to fly safely all around the world, they will need to give up some of their privacy to do so.ConclusionThe Terrorist Watch List was created to monitor those flying on domestic and international flights after the attacks on America on September 11, 2001. Currently, the list is not very detailed and very long, creating many problems. These problems include duplications of names an d false positives causing hassle for passengers who are mistaken as terrorists. The list is also growing rapidly which makes screening for names take longer and longer. The government agencies responsible for the list are also slow at removing false names. While this list is a great start to protect passengers while flying, there are still many advances that will need to be made. The names on the list need to have more details and research corresponding to them, and the agencies working with this list need to work together to cut down on duplicate information. They will also need to work on the length of the list, and sub-lists, to make sure that it is used effectively to prevent terrorist attacks.

The Brain Pacemaker Essay -- Medical Science

IntroductionThe brain pacemaker is an interesting invention of the modern technology, it is a medical whatchamacallit that is fixed into the brain to send electroshock signals into the targeted tissues of the brain. This braid is used to treat patients who allow from Epilepsy, it controls their seizures, and helps Parkinsons disease patients better control their movements. Parkinsons disease affects the authority you move. It happens when in that location is a problem with certain administration cells in the brain. Plus, it treats major depression. What is it?It is a surgical treatment that involves the imbedation of a medical device that is both placed in the brain or egressside. It sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. When it placed in the brain this treatment is called deep brain stimulation. And when it is placed out side the brain or near the spinal anesthesia cord it is called spinal cord stimulation, there is another place where it can be placed away which is around cranial nerves such as the vagus nerve and it is called vagus nerve stimulation. How it works? The doctor drills into the skull of the patient who remains awake during motion two holes, they are the size of a coin. still that area is anesthetized to keep it numb during surgery. Surgeons then uses computed tomography (CT) scanning to locate the exact targeted area, and then implant two thin wires with electrode contacts near the Cg25 area of the brain. In the area where they believe is causing the patients disorder. Generally, these targets are the thalamus, subthalamic nucleus, and globus pallidus. Then they stitch the loose end of the wires under the beat and attach it to the pacemaker device, which is fixed near the collarbone. In some cases it may be implante... ...rchers found that when Parkinsons patients received brain stimulation, they had trouble make exhausting decisions.?Because the brain can shift slightly during surgery, there is the possibilit y that the electrodes can become displaced or dislodged this might cause some problems such as constitution changes.?There are other complications of surgery, such as bleeding within the brain.ConclusionThe brain is the center of thought, emotion, memory, speech, and many more, and it is the most sophisticated organ in the human body. By it doctors were able to help patients who suffer from Epilepsy, Parkinsons disease and sever depressions by inserting a device called brain pacemaker. It has already helped many patients to cover their problems. But scientists are still experimenting in making this device more advanced to reduce the number of risks it may cause. Moving Between Different Cultures in Poetry Essay -- Half Caste Search

Moving Between Different Cultures in PoetryFor my essay I will be looking at two poems which deal with theexperience of moving between different cultures, these are Half-Casteand Search for My Tongue. These poems are written from experience.John Agard the causation of Half-Caste was born in Gugana and locomote toBritain in 1977. He is half-caste himself and his poem expresses hisfeelings about the term half-caste.Sujata Bhatt the authoress of Search for My Tongue was born in Indiain 1956, her family moved to the United States of America in the1960s and she promptly lives in Germany. In her poem Search for My Tongueshe explains how she feels about having two different languages herbirth language, Gujerati and her second language, German.Half-Caste and Search for My Tongue, create very vivid images, whichmakes it easier for the indorser to interpret and understand two thepoems and the authors opinion on the different cultures.Half- Caste creates many images, by using descriptive l anguage andhumour. It creates such images as a man, standing on leg and havinghalf mih ear beca enforce he is only half-caste so he only has half whata normal person would have but it also creates images about objectsmix a red an green is a half-caste canvas and even music mix ablack key wid a white key is a half-caste symphony. This helps the commentator to understand how the author is feeling about the termhalf-caste, and can also come to a conclusion about the termthemselves. All the imagery in this poem makes the reader think abouthow anybody who has ever been called half-caste feels.Search for My Tongue creates a very vivid image using very descriptivemetaphors, it grows back, a stump of a shoot, grows ... ...age which creates vividimages for the reader. Using gujerati in the middle of the poems essaysthat her mother tongue, her birth language, is still strong and attimes, even stronger then her second language. In conclusion both of these poems deal with the issues faced when moving between different cultures in their own ways. They both uselanguage and imagery to express their messages Half- Caste exploresthe way that we use the term half-caste in our vocabulary andexaggerates it. This is to a great effect as it makes the reader thinkmore about racial issues and the way that we treat pile fromdifferent cultures. Search for my Tongue deals with moving betweendifferent cultures by actually writing about the language barriers andlosing your identity. This is how we can link the poems together andshow how people move between different cultures.
